Soğukluk
Entrance & RestThe entry area. Change into peshtemals, balance your body temperature, sip water or herbal tea while preparing for the ritual. Also the resting space after the ritual.
A women-only ritual passed down through centuries — beneath marble domes, on warm stones. A heritage that reaches you from Seljuk and Ottoman times.
The Turkish bath is the last link in a tradition stretching from Roman thermae to Byzantine baths, to Seljuk and Ottoman culture. A thousand-year ritual.
In Ottoman Istanbul, the hammam was more than a place of washing — it was a meeting, a social ritual, a sacred space. Women would visit weekly, often as families, spending the day with coffee, folk songs and conversation. Bridal hammam, baby hammam, soldier's hammam — every special occasion had its own tradition.
Architecturally, the Turkish bath consists of three chambers: soğukluk (the cool entrance and resting area), ılıklık (the warm transition room), and sıcaklık (the hot main chamber with the marble belly stone). This three-chamber design is an engineering wonder preserved unchanged for centuries.
At Esma Sultan Hammam, we bring this traditional architecture together with modern luxury — offering a fully enclosed, women-only, hijab-friendly, elegant experience.
A conscious journey from cool to warm to hot
The entry area. Change into peshtemals, balance your body temperature, sip water or herbal tea while preparing for the ritual. Also the resting space after the ritual.
The middle room where your body gradually adapts to heat. Sweat glands open, pores expand. A few minutes here softens the transition into the hot chamber.
The main chamber with the marble belly stone. Here you lie, warm up, and receive the foam ritual. The heart of the Turkish bath tradition the center of sweat and purification.
From the moment you enter the door to the last sip of coffee
You're welcomed at the door with a welcome drink. Peshtemal, towel and slippers are provided. You leave belongings in lockers and prepare in the soğukluk chamber.
Sit a few minutes in the warm chamber preparing your body for heat. Pores open, circulation accelerates. This short transition ensures maximum benefit from the main ritual.
Lie on the heated marble belly stone for 15-20 minutes. The marble's gentle warmth releases muscles, sweat begins, toxins rise to the surface.
Our therapist gently rubs your body with the traditional exfoliating mitt. Dead cells fall away, skin becomes silk-smooth. This is the signature of the Turkish bath.
Abundant foam from olive oil soap wraps you like a cloud. Our therapist works it gently into your body — at once cleansing and a soft massage.
Foam is rinsed with warm water. You return to soğukluk to rest. The ritual closes with traditional Turkish coffee, tea or a refreshing beverage.
Wisdom accumulated through centuries, confirmed by modern science
Removal of dead cells, deep purification of pores, and a silky-smooth complexion.
Heat and exfoliation significantly accelerate blood flow and improve oxygenation.
Intense sweating helps the body release toxins, heavy metals and accumulated waste.
Heat and the marble's touch release tension and ease cramps, lightening the body.
The combination of warm steam, candlelight and silence calms the nervous system.
The body's gradual cooling after the hammam is the natural gateway to deep, restorative sleep.
Regular hammam strengthens thermal regulation; the immune system becomes more resilient.
For centuries, the hammam has been a space where women meet, share, and uplift each other.
The same centuries-old ritual, with luxury and privacy added
The gentle warmth of marble, the echoing silence of the dome, the steam dancing in candlelight. Here time does not flow — it slows.
Small but important tips for a perfect hammam experience
Drink plenty of water before and after. Heavy sweating leads to fluid loss; prefer water over tea or coffee.
Avoid heavy meals at least 2 hours before. A light snack or empty stomach is ideal.
Allow at least 90 minutes. A rushed hammam ruins the joy — remember, you came to slow down.
Do not wax or epilate 24 hours before. Sensitive skin can be irritated by the scrub.
Hot steam can damage metal items; remove rings and earrings and leave them in the locker.
Don't be active right after. Rest at least 15-20 minutes, let your body temperature settle.
The standard ritual lasts about 30 minutes. It covers preparation in the cool chamber, adaptation in the warm chamber, resting on the belly stone in the hot chamber, and the foam ritual.
