The science of dry heat

Sauna is a different therapy from the hammam: dry heat. Our sauna runs at 70-90°C with humidity around 10-20%. This combination triggers very fast and deep sweating up to half a liter per hour.

Sweating is not just cooling; it's the body's most powerful detox mechanism. During sauna, 20% of sweat weight is made up of toxins, heavy metals and metabolic waste. Heart rate rises to 100-150 bpm equivalent to mild cardio exercise.

At the same time, an endorphin release is triggered. That deep peace and lightness you feel after sauna is your body's chemical renewal.

Sauna benefits

A centuries-old wellness practice confirmed by modern science

01

Deep Detox

Intense sweating brings toxins, heavy metals and metabolic waste to the surface. The burden on the liver and kidneys is reduced.

02

Heart Health

Heart rate rises to 100-150 bpm in the sauna equivalent to a mild cardiovascular workout. Regular sauna strengthens the cardiovascular system.

03

Muscle Release

High heat penetrates muscle tissues deeply, releasing chronic tension and post-workout soreness. Joint mobility increases.

04

Stress Release

Endorphin levels surge, cortisol drops. The deep calm you feel after sauna is a chemically validated reality.

05

Immunity Boost

Elevated body temperature creates a temporary "fever" simulation that activates white blood cells and increases resistance to viral infections.

06

Deep Sleep

The gradual cooling of body temperature after sauna triggers melatonin production. Much deeper and uninterrupted sleep follows.

07

Skin Renewal

Opened pores and accelerated circulation oxygenate skin cells. Skin glows, tightens, acne risk decreases.

08

Respiratory Ease

Warm air eases airways, opens sinuses, regulates mucus production. Asthma and bronchitis susceptibility decreases (with specialist approval).

09

Metabolic Activity

Basal metabolism rises up to 20% during a sauna session. Regular use supports weight management efforts.

Classic three-session protocol

Traditional Finnish method for maximum benefit

1
~ 5 min Preparation

Preparation shower

Take a warm shower before sauna, hygienically prepare your body. Tie up your hair or wear a cap. Get ready with a cotton wrap.

2
~ 10-12 min 80°C

First session — Opening

Start by sitting on the lower bench. Your body adjusts to heat gradually, pores open, the first wave of sweat begins. Enjoy without straining yourself.

3
~ 5-10 min Cooling

Cooling break

Leave the sauna, take a cold shower or enter the pool. This thermal shock causes blood vessels to contract and relax the strongest detox effect begins right here.

4
~ 8-10 min 85°C

Second session — Deepening

This time try sitting on the upper bench, it's hotter. With the intense sweating wave, deep detox begins. Listen to your body, don't push.

5
~ 5-10 min Cooling

Second cooling

Cold shock again. At this point your body is completely relaxed, circulation balanced. Don't forget to drink plenty of water.

6
~ 6-8 min 75°C

Third session — Finale

Optional closing session. Shorter, lighter. At this point your body is fully purified, your nervous system has shifted to parasympathetic mode.

7
~ 15-20 min Rest

Rest & refreshments

Rest in the cool chamber. Renew your body with herbal tea, mineral water and light refreshments. This final stage is at least as important as the sauna itself.

— The Perfect Combination —

Hammam + Sauna = Full balance

Hammam and sauna touch the body in two different ways: hammam with humid heat softens muscles and opens skin pores; sauna with dry heat provides deep sweating and detox. Used together, the body's renewal becomes comprehensive.

The golden sequence of centuries-old traditional wellness: first hammam, then sauna, finally pool cooling. This three-stage protocol is like applying a reset to your body.

Your questions

What is the sauna temperature?

Our sauna runs at traditional Finnish standards of 70-90°C. Humidity is low (10-20%), which is why it's classified as dry heat. This temperature is optimal for deep sweating and detoxification.

How long does sauna take?

A single session lasts 8-15 minutes. We recommend planning your total sauna experience as 2-3 sessions with 5-10 minute cooling breaks in between. The full experience can take 30-45 minutes.

Is the sauna women-only?

Yes. The sauna area at Esma Sultan Hammam serves women exclusively. No male guests or staff are allowed. Hijab-wearing guests enjoy the sauna with complete privacy.

Do I pay extra to use the sauna?

No. Sauna access is included in the Esma Sultan Signature Package and our other packages. When you book a hammam or massage, you have sauna access without any extra charge.

What should I wear in the sauna?

You can enter the sauna in a wrap or swimsuit. Going barefoot is traditional. Since the body sweats heavily in the sauna, prefer cotton/natural fabrics. Synthetic clothing is not recommended.

Can I use sauna and hammam together?

Highly recommended. Ideal sequence: hammam first, then sauna, then pool. The hammam relaxes muscles and opens pores; sauna provides deep detox; pool gently cools the body. This three-stage ritual is the gold standard of classic wellness experience.

Can pregnant or hypertensive guests use the sauna?

Sauna is not recommended for pregnant guests, heart patients, those with high blood pressure, hypotension, or uncontrolled diabetes. Doctor approval is mandatory for these conditions. Please contact us before booking and we'll offer alternatives.

What should I do after sauna?

Cool your body slowly (pool or cold shower), drink plenty of water, rest 15-20 minutes. Avoid heavy meals after sauna; light snacks and electrolyte drinks work well. If you use sauna regularly, 1-2 sessions per week is the optimal frequency.

How do I book?
